Seek Wisdom

Seek wisdom

People go to college to get degrees.  Even this “At Acme Looniversity we get our Toon Degree”.  We want to be smarter and learn things.  But for some reason the world rejects and opposes seeking wisdom in God’s Word.  There is so much to be gained from the Bible that it shows stupidity to not read it.  I want you to look at something Solomon the wisest man to ever live wrote to his son.

Proverbs 2:1-8
“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding and if you look for it as silver and search for it as hidden treasure then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.  For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.  He holds victory in store for the upright he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.”

You have to ask yourself “What exactly are you pursuing.”  Are you seeking God’s wisdom or man’s because you have a choice.  Like the famous scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade you have to choose wisely.

Psalm 63:1
“O God, you are my God earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

Compassion

Compassion

Years ago there was a sermon series at Real Life and Micah preached on life verses.  Simply verses in the Bible that shape us as a person.  If you’ve ever seen this blog via email from me you have seen my life verses posted but have you ever looked them up. See I want to present to you those verses and show you some pretty awesome ones in relation to them. I titled this compassion because I want you to consider the Compassion of God.

Psalm 18:21 “He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.”

Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

These are my life verses.  I could never in any way shape or form earn God’s love.  I am humbled that he would in any way delight in me.

There’s a song by Sandi Patty called In Heaven’s Eyes and one line in it just sums things up in regards to the crucifixion and Jesus sacrifice to redeem us.

“And looking up we’ll see compassion’s fire ablaze in Heaven’s Eyes.”

I was reading my Bible and I found something that will humble you and at the same time give you much to be thankful for.  The whole chapter of Psalm 145 is amazing but this caught my attention.

Psalm 145:8-13

“The Lord is gracious and compassionate slow to anger and rich in love.  The Lord is good to all, he has compassion on all he has made.  All you have made will praise you, O Lord; your saints will extol you.  They will tell of your kingdom and speak of your might, so that all men may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.  Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations.”

Psalm 147:10-11 you’re going to love this one.  “His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse nor his delight in the legs of a man; the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”

I’m going to be the first to probably quote from Pastor Micah Davidson’s new book just released this past week called Sticks and Stones because I’m giving you a whole blog here about good news but he explains why we need it very well.
“But the Gospel is not only for saving people.  We need Gospel everyday!  We all need good news every day!  We are designed to run on the love of God and the Good News about him.  And we are designed to run on and focus on the good things that God is doing in us and around us.  But there is a choice, we must choose that our lives be about Gospel; how we smile, how we share, what we say- Gospel.”

We need to remember the compassion of God 1. Because we need it and 2.  Because others need it and 3. We are told to live it and share it.

Like Incense

Like incense

A lot of music in churches comes directly from scripture and I love it when I’m reading in the Bible and come across the verses where the song lyrics originated because it reminds me that people who claim they can’t memorize scripture can somehow sing it and not realize they just did something they claimed they couldn’t do.

This morning I was reading Psalm 141 and I knew the words seemed familiar.  141:1-2 “O Lord, I call to you; come quickly to me.  Hear my voice when I call to you.  May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.”

See there is a song by Hillsong called Like Incense/ Sometimes by Step.  It’s a mix of these verses you just read and part of Psalm 63:1 “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”  The whole song is about seeking God’s face and repeating prayer and scripture back to him.

I want you to view the song in light of the scriptures you’ve just read.

“May my prayer rise like incense before you
The lifting of my hands a sacrifice
Oh Lord Jesus turn your eyes upon me
For I know there is mercy in your sight

Your statutes are my heritage forever
My heart is set on keeping your decrees
So still my anxious urge toward rebellion
And let love keep my will on its knees

Oh God you are my God and I will ever praise you”

See praising God and remembering scripture changes our thoughts and hearts.  I posted a verse in the blog about a week ago and I feel it bears repeating because in its simplicity it should be a daily prayer for the believer.

Psalm 119:133 “Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.”

I have added other songs straight from scripture and those are Psalm 1, Micah 6:8, Psalm 139 and Nothing is beyond you and Let our Voices Rise.

Folded Metal

Folded metal

There’s a movie called Highlander the Final Dimension and halfway through the movie the main character Connor MacLeod has his sword broken and you get to watch him fashion a new sword.  They talk a bit about metal being heated in sheets and folded to form a new sword.  With each piece of metal added the sword becomes stronger.
I noticed a phrase in Acts 18:23.  “After spending some time in Antioch, Paul set out from there and traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia strengthening all the disciples.”  As Paul went places by his words, letters and actions he strengthened.  As he worked or whatever he did he was like a sword being fashioned layer by layer.  Cue my Shrek imitation “Ogres have layers.”  I have a friend named David and he and I share scripture and ideas via text messages through the week because we don’t get to see each other often.  But he pointed out to me one day we are adding to our friendship.  With these weekly Bible study blogs I try to push you the reader closer to God and help build you up.  Maybe add a layer to the sword in some small way.  My hope is that you the reader go on to strengthen someone else.  I don’t know what you’ve been told but the devil will try to tell you God can’t use you.  Think about the apostle Paul for a second.  He persecuted and killed Christians then he had an encounter with God was blinded had his sight restored and became the preacher to both Jews and Gentiles.  If he never taught anywhere else if he never strengthened believers the Gospel would not have gone to the Gentiles that being us in any country outside of Israel we wouldn’t have the Bible we have today.  Are you building up other believers you interact with as you go?  Isaiah agreed to be used how about you?

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”  Proverbs 27:17

“Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.  So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

Home

Home

You’ve got a home key on your keyboard, a place you live you call home.  At the church building I attend Real Life Corpus Christi we greet new people by saying Welcome Home.  It’s a place we want you to belong and to worship God with other believers.  In Psalm 122:1 it says this.  “I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord. ‘“ I can tell you personally I look forward to going to church to being around other believers and being encouraged by music and scripture.
I’m going to tell you something very personal in hopes that someone else can relate.  For 13 years I worked at a call center and if you’ve never done that kind of work it can be the most stressful job ever.  There were easy parts and then there was the rest of the job.  I got so much verbal abuse from coworkers and customers alike.  By the end of the week I looked forward to Sunday where I could be around people in a building who actually said kind things to one another.  The reason I’m referring to it as a building and not as church is because the people, you and me and those around they make up the church and the body of Christ.  We don’t always get it right but we try.  Sometimes I have learned as much from a sermon as I have from talking to a fellow church attender.  See you don’t know who you’re impacting just by being there talking to someone.  My friend Donald is a pastor and I have seen him comment a few times trying to remind people to continue to attend church and not drift away from it.  What he’s saying is Biblical teaching and it’s not just the Pastor but the believers who should also do this.

Hebrews 10:19-25
“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is his body, and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.  Let us hold unwaveringly to the hope we profess for he who promised is faithful.  Also let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds.  Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another— all the more as you see the day approaching.”

We’re supposed to be encouraging and building up one another.  You may have a day where you don’t want to be inside a church building but what if that’s the day God wanted to use you to teach you or someone else?  Think about it.  Granted I understand in bad weather or in sickness you shouldn’t meet together.

Psalm 84:1-4

“How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty!  My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh cry out for the living God.  Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself where she may have her young— a place near your altar, O Lord Almighty, My King and my God.  Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:11
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Just a small disclaimer lyrically all the songs I post have something to do with the blog except for two.  Song of Moses and My Father's Heart were just great songs I've been listening to this week.   There was an additional song I added to the portion of this that is emailed to my small group that sign up via email.  There is no Youtube video for it so if you want to try Amazon or ITunes you may be able to find it.  The song is called You Belong Here by Sheila Walsh off her cd I Hear Angels.  I encourage you to look it up and listen to it.  It's the example of how a group of believers in a church should act towards one another.
