God's control

To the reader’s of this blog,
I don’t have it all together not even close.  I try to encourage others with this blog.  I have problems of my own and I often must remember that God is still in control just like you do because I have problems that are bigger than me.  I read a passage a few months back in a book my dad gave me called Seasons of Life by Charles R. Swindoll.  The book dates to 1983.  I was born in 1976.  If you’re inclined, you can do the math and get back to me on how old either I or the book are.  Sometimes I read something, and it sticks with me.  Other times I feel God leading me to share a thing that I’ve read with others and this is one of those things it seems since yesterday God has wanted me to share this.  I don’t know if I need it more than you.

God’s Control

The bitter news of Dawson Trotman’s drowning swept like a cold wind across Schroon Lake to the shoreline.  Eyewitnesses tell of the profound anxiety, the tears, the helpless disbelief in the faces of those who now looked across the deep blue water.  Everyone’s face except one – Lila Trotman, Dawson’s widow.  As she suddenly walked upon the scene a close friend shouted, “Oh Lila… He’s gone.  Dawson’s gone!”  To that she replied in calm assurance the words of Psalm 115:3
But our God is in the heavens;
He does whatever he pleases.

All of the anguish, the sudden loneliness that normally consumes and cripples those who survive did not invade that woman’s heart.  Instead, she leaned hard upon her sovereign Lord.
As you read these words…. Does that seem strange to you?  Does it seem unusual to refer to a tragic death as being God’s pleasure?  Honestly now, do you think God’s control over us is total or partial?  Let’s allow his word to speak on this deep subject:
Thou hast enclosed me behind and before
And laid thy hand upon me.
Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in they book they were all written.
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them
Psalm 139:5, 16
Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker—
An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth!
Will the clay say to the potter, “What are you doing?”
Isaiah 45:9
……I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like me…
Saying, “My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all my good pleasure.”
Isaiah 46:9-10
… He does according to His will in the host of heaven
And among the inhabitants of earth;
And no one can ward off his hand
Or say to him, “What hast thou done?”
Daniel 4:35

There are more.  Patiently, repeatedly, in a dozen different ways the Word makes the point.  Accept it or not, God’s calling the shots.  He’s running the show.  Either He’s in full control or He’s off his throne.  It’s as foolish to say He’s, “almost sovereign” as it would be to say I’m “almost married” or Kennedy was “almost president” or the surgeon’s gloves are “almost sterile.”
If you’re trying to grasp all the ramifications of this great truth… don’t.  You can’t anyway.  Feverishly toiling to unravel all the knots can turn you into a fanatical freak… it will push you to the edge of your mental capacity… it will result in endless hours of theological hairsplitting.  The finite can never plumb the depths of the infinite… so don’t waste your time trying.
It was a glorious day when I was liberated from the concentration camp of fear… the fear of saying… “I don’t understand the reasons why, but I accept God’s hand in what has happened.”  It was a greater day when I realized that nobody expected me to have all the answers… least of all God!  If I could figure it all out, I’d qualify as his adviser, and scripture makes it clear He doesn’t need my puny counsel.  He wants my unreserved love, my unqualified devotion, my undaunted trust—not my unenlightened analysis of His ways.
One of the marks of spiritual maturity is the quiet confidence that God is in control… without the need to understand why He does what he does.  Lila Trotman bore such a mark as she faced the ways of God that were unsearchable… and unfathomable.
What marks your life?

Cause and effect

Cause and effect

There are a lot of verses in Proverbs that are very cause and effect.  If you do one thing this will happen.  A good term would be Bible based life math.  Like any math problem there is one thing plus another and then a result.  I ask the reader a lot in this blog “what are you seeking?”  It’s a question that matters.  Some of you have read this one illustration from me and some have not.  Years ago I took a motorcycle safety course and with a motorcycle you aren’t limited like you can be with the windshield of a car.  You have a helmet and you have to focus.  See a motorcycle is extremely responsive.  If you’ve never ridden one you don’t understand.  A motorcycle rider leans into turns.  My instructor told us a simple statement that is true of life as well.  “Where you look is where you will go.”  Say you’re on a motorcycle and you start looking at a cotton field well after enough time you start drifting that way.  We have multiple choices each day and each moment.  Proverbs 28:14 brings us to reality with one of them.

“Blessed is the man who always fears the Lord, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble.”

Every Easter on tv a channel will play the movie The Ten Commandments.  I read an article that this was the 45th consecutive year this movie was aired.  The movie depicts Moses by God’s power leading the people of Israel out of captivity in Egypt.  In Exodus it talks about the ten plagues and each time Moses tells Pharaoh let my people go.  Almost every time it says Pharaoh hardened his heart.  Until you get to the last three plagues.  After the plague of locusts in Exodus 10:20 “But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he would not let the Israelites go.”  Then in verse 27 after the plague of darkness “But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he was not willing to let them go.”

God gave him chance after chance to change then he started changing Pharaoh and the chances were over.  God gives us choices over and over but how we respond is what matters.  I said Proverbs 28:14 was cause and effect.  Read it again.

“Blessed is the man who always fears the Lord, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble.”

Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

I’m going to ask again what are you seeking?  Where’s your motorcycle going are you heading in the right direction?  Are you seeking after God or hardening your heart.  Your choices and thoughts are more important than you may realize.

Dennis Jernigan wrote a song called All in All and part of it says this.

“Seeking you as a precious jewel Lord to give up I’d be a fool
You are my all in all.”

Psalm 63:1

“O God, you are my God earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

Keep you

Keep you

I have a friend who once proposed to this young lady and it was a different proposal than what most guys would say. He asked her “Can I keep you?” This is blog that sometimes goes by the name of A Weekly Dose of Hope. I’m here to tell you that there is hope in God’s Word. He can keep you. See in 1 Corinthians 1:4-9 Paul makes a few statements about our security in Christ and about Christ Jesus keeping us.

“I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—in all your speaking and in all your knowledge— because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will keep you strong to the end, that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord is faithful.”

He’s going to keep you and he is faithful we need to keep our eyes fixed on him. He’s got the hard part of the agreement taken care of.

“My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness I dare not trust the sweetest frame but wholly lean on Jesus name.”

“I am on the Rock, The sure foundation
I am on the Rock, on the Rock
I am on the Rock, his revelation
I am on the Rock
Though the winds may blow
And though the floods may grow
I shall not be moved cause I am on the Rock!”

Hello Officer

Hello Officer

We have in this country people who are called Peace officers.  Did you know you as a Christian are called to keep the peace as well?  Matthew 5:9 says “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.”  Some that know me know that for 13 years I worked at a call center and I dealt with all kinds of attitude problems from callers and coworkers alike.  I very much dislike arguments of any form.  In Romans 12:18 God gives us one of the hardest commands to follow.  It’s a command for any relationship you have with anyone.  “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”  I can already hear the Mission Impossible theme playing in my head.  In Romans 14:19 we see this. “Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.”

Some of you argumentative people need to “Simmer down now!”  Stop arguing and being so sarcastic and learn to interact with people.  In Galatians 5:22 it lists the fruit of the Spirit and right there #3 on the list is peace.  As Christians we are part of the body of Christ and we’re supposed to be at peace with other believers and unbelievers.  It said if at all possible as much as it depends on you.  Depends on you and me um the other person doesn’t seem too responsible here all of the focus seems to shift to the reader making them responsible.  Are we trying to be at peace with others?  Uh we’re supposed to be.  The verse didn’t seem to let anyone off the hook.  Maybe just maybe we need to step down off our high horse and stop thinking so highly of ourselves and treat others better than ourselves.  It’s what we were supposed to be doing before we got our feathers all ruffled.  Ruffles are for potato chips anyway not people.  I would tell you to Keep calm and call Batman but really keep calm and seek God!  God can humble you and it won’t be pretty or you could humble yourself and pray for the person you aren’t at peace with.  I guarantee from personal experience it becomes hard to stay mad at someone when you pray for them because God changes your heart.
I recently posted this picture on Facebook and it had a picture of the Bible and said “The answer to all of life’s problems can be found in this book.”  Someone made the comment that it doesn’t tell you how to deal with difficult people.  My response was it was pretty well explained by Jesus in Matthew 22:37-40 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself.  All the law and prophets hang on these two commandments.”  It’s upward because we love God and put him first then its outward because we love others but we can’t do one without the other.

“You can see the world from here
The stars of heaven will appear
When the love He gives is the love you share
You can see the world.”  You can see the wold by Whiteheart

Romans 15:1-4
“We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.  Each of us should please his neighbor for his own good to build him up. For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: ‘The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.’ For everything written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.”

For Others

For others

Are you concerned about those around you?  We live in a selfish world.  I laid out a challenge on Facebook recently because there’s a lot of challenges on there to do stupid stuff.  But my challenge was this and I encourage you to do it also.  Pray for those around you!  I work as a security guard and each morning I spend an hour or more signing people into work being part of a two person team creating two lanes of traffic.  I have a zone.  My boss didn’t quite understand when I said it but there is a space between these two safety cones in my head they are where I exist and come alive.  I pace back and forth while waiting for people to drive up.  But while I pace I pray for the employees.  I pray asking God to protect them and to give them hearts that seek after Him.  See you can work at any job but you can pray silently for those around you.  I see them drive back and forth sometimes it’s my only interaction with them.  God calls us to care for others.  We should be praying for our family, friends and coworkers.  It should be our passion. For years at Real Life there was a lady by the name of Cynthia Beatty and between services she would walk through the auditorium praying for the people who would sit in the chairs.  Why limit praying for others to something only done at church?

Pastor Micah brought up these verses Sunday and it hit me that we should be more concerned about other people.

Philippians 2:1-5
“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.  Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.  Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.  Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:”.

Jesus even prayed for you and me, all believers and his disciples it’s written in John 17.

There is an acronym I learned years ago that works like this.

J-Jesus first
O-Others second
Y- Yourself last

See I’m married and I get this out of order at times.

God has to be mine and Marion’s first priority then our spouse and then ourselves.  Like I said I don’t always get it right but I’m trying.

You and I need to pray for and care for those we interact with because God has made a difference in our lives.

Been trying for hours to come up with a song to go with this.  You will find one here that seems out of place but isn’t.  Class of 95 was my graduation song.  You the reader of this blog are prayed for by the writer.  I pray God will use this to draw you closer to himself.  I want you to read part of the lyrics to this song.

“To the class of 95
Congratulations are in line
God has surely been most faithful
He’s been so much more than kind

So get ready to test your wings And fly away but when you do
Remember you are loved
And somebody here is always praying for you.”

To you the reader.  God loves you, I love you and know that you are prayed for.

For eternity by Twila Paris I have literally had this song stuck in my head for two days and it's so awesome I just threw it in here.
