Still listening

At times we get weird ideas about prayer like asking God to help us win the lottery.  to quote the commercial "That's not how this works, that's not how any of this works."  In 1 Kings 18:1-40 there is a challenge issued by Elijah to King Ahab and because Elijah prayed it hadn't rained for three years.  This was in Samaria but it sounds a bit like Texas.  So the challenge gets laid down.  But there's a wee bit of humor in this passage.  Watch this as Elijah sends Obidiah to issue the challenge to Ahab and the prophets of Baal and Asherah.  1 Kings 18:7-15
7As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8“Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’ ”
9“What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? 10As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. 11But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ 12I don’t know where the Spirit of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped theLord since my youth. 13Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. 14And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”
So in verses 18-25 we see Elijah lay it all out.  "20So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing."
The object here was for one party or the other to call fire down from heaven to prove who was the true God.  See Baal worshipers had some weird ideas about prayer aside from just praying to a god that didn't exist.  They danced and hobbled around the altar.  Elijah didn't cut them any slack either.  "You'll have to shout louder,"  he scoffed, "for surely he is a god.  Perhaps he is daydreaming, or is relieving himself.  Or maybe he is away on a trip, or is asleep and needs to be wakened!"  Then these weird worshipers cut themselves with swords and knives.  If that is what it takes to get a god's attention I'm not interested.  They did all this till nighttime.  No answer.  Now catch what happens in 1 Kings 18:30-40
30Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.” 32With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahsa of seed. 33He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
34“Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
36At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37Answer me,Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
39When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”
40Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.
As followers of God we are clean and because we are clean he does listen and answer prayer.  "For God made Christ, who never sinned to be offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ."  We don't have to scream to be heard by God.
7Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. 1 Peter 5:7
16So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:16
11The LORD has given me a strong warning not to think like everyone else does. He said,
12“Don’t call everything a conspiracy, like they do,
and don’t live in dread of what frightens them.
13Make the LORD of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life.
He is the one you should fear.
He is the one who should make you tremble.
14He will keep you safe.
But to Israel and Judah
he will be a stone that makes people stumble,
a rock that makes them fall.
And for the people of Jerusalem
he will be a trap and a snare.
15Many will stumble and fall,
never to rise again.
They will be snared and captured.”
16Preserve the teaching of God;
entrust his instructions to those who follow me.
17I will wait for the LORD,
who has turned away from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my hope in him.
18I and the children the LORD has given me serve as signs and warnings to Israel from the LORD of Heaven’s Armies who dwells in his Temple on Mount Zion.
19Someone may say to you, “Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.” But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the dead?
20Look to God’s instructions and teachings! People who contradict his word are completely in the dark. 21They will go from one place to another, weary and hungry. And because they are hungry, they will rage and curse their king and their God. They will look up to heaven 22and down at the earth, but wherever they look, there will be trouble and anguish and dark despair. They will be thrown out into the darkness.  Isaiah 8:11-22
These are the lyrics to Scream a song by ZoeGirl and i think it is so profound when thinking about prayer
"Scream"
Does anybody know how I feel?
Sometimes I'm numb, sometimes I'm overcome
Does anybody care what's going on?
Do I have to wear my scars like a badge on my arm
For you to see me, I need release

Do I have to scream for you to hear me?
Do I have to bleed for you to see me?
'Cause I grieve, you're not listening to me
Do I need to scream?

Has anybody seen what's been done?
Where was my defense? No one heard my protest
The eyes of God were watching me
It's time to make my peace, let it go and be released
So I can breathe again
I'm on my knees

I've been marked, set apart
But I'm cut so deep and afraid of the dark
One drop of blood from the hole in Your hand
Is enough to heal me and make me stand

'Cause I'm clean, He is listening to me

I don't have to scream for Him to hear me
Don't have to bleed for Him to see me
'Cause I'm clean, He is listening to me
I don't have to scream
I don't have to bleed
'Cause I'm clean, He is listening
And I don't have to scream

Love of an eternity

Something that saddens me is seeing people I care about getting divorced and I'm seeing a lot of it recently.  At this blog I'm all about hope.  Love is not meant to be something you fall in and out of.  That's a feeling.  It's like equating love yo I don't know acid reflux.  Love is a verb that requires action and a choice.  My wife and I may fight and argue but we still choose to love one another.  In there 80's there was a song called Love of a Lifetime by Firehouse and the chorus said this.  "I finally found the love of a lifetime.  A love to last my whole life through.  I finally found the love of a lifetime.  Forever in my heart, I finally found the love of a lifetime."  But really a lifetime is not near long enough.  How about a love for now and eternity?  See that's the love we're actually looking for.  Well where do I find that you ask?  Good that means you're still paying attention.  I know it's familiar but we need the reminder.  "For God so loved the world so much that He gave his one and only son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life."  See the love of an eternity is found in Jesus death burial and him rising again.  no other way to heaven!  "We are the reason that he gave his life.  We were the reason that he suffered and died.  To a world that was lost he gave all he could give to show us the reason to live."  Romans 5:8 makes this extremely clear.  "But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners ."  See we as Christians have a love to be thankful for.  A few years ago musician Jewel said this one phrase that to this day is so profound.  "We are loved beyond our ability to comprehend."  when you consider God's love its staggering.  the Bible is a love story the greatest one ever told of God pursuing people.  Psalm 92:1-3  "It is good to give thanks to the Lord to sing praises to the Most High.  It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening.  Accompanied by the ten- stringed harp and the melody of the lyre."  See the love people offer has strings attatched and is almost condition based.  Geoff Moore calls it the "I love you if.  if you perform if you do what I ask."  God's love is unconditional and undeserved.  Here's more sections of scripture full of promise and reasons to rejoice and find hope in God's love.  Romans 8:31-39, Psalm 139, 1 Corinthians 13

kindness and a behind the scenes of the Batcave Blog

From time to time i give you all a glimpse behind the scenes of the Batcave Blog.  Doing this online lifegroup feed back doesn't happen a lot.  I welcome it but don't always get it.  Occasionally it's from my Dad or Pastor Greg.  About 3 weeks ago I posted a blog called Stop Looking Down; my sister, my wife, my dad and multiple people latched onto the post and loved it.  Marion read it before I posted it and her exact words were "I approve this bible study."  What you don't always see is the stuff that happens at my job.  the people where I work have no clue this happens but I pray often that the men and women I work with will become a people that seek after God.  a few weeks ago I was almost made to work a double.  My friend Phillip got called and at first he was going to say no and he changed his mind and came in to relieve me.  He told me i was a really nice guy and I didn't deserve to work a whole extra shift after working for 13 hrs.  a few weeks before this he and i had been talking about this co-worker of ours that has treated me bad since day one.  he said "I just don't get your personality when someone disrespects me i can be a real _____ but you continue to be nice to ______."  I looked back later at what He said and I realized that was God at work in me because it's so easy to be rude right back to someone.  Two Sundays ago I got to visit with Chris Godoy and like I said feedback on the blog is rare.  What he said was extremely encouraging to me.  "I still get your emails and read them all the time.  They are exactly what I need to hear and so timely and deal with things I'm facing."  Chris used to be on the media team with me at Real Life and He was one of the 3 people who was instrumental in getting me to even start a life group.  He's before described the blog as a "weekly shot of spiritual vitamins".

I'm also going to share with you part of an E-mail I sent to Pastors Greg and Micah.

Greg a few weeks ago Micah was preaching on kindness and I was telling Marion after church I felt like God was telling me that we needed to do something for these two waitresses who always take really good care of us at Denny's and Texas Flame.  So we talked for a while and finally decided to go to HEB and get Amazon cards.  We have a friend Brandy who works nights at Denny's on Everhart and a few days before this was Mother's Day and also her birthday.  Since I started my life group when we were meeting at Denny's at midnight Brandy and I have been friends she was even working the night I asked Marion to be my girlfriend.  So after I got off work one night we took the cards to her.  She was so happy!
Then this past Sunday we finally after two weeks of trying we caught up with Madison our friend at Texas Flame on a Saturday.  After our meal we gave her two Amazon gift cards and she nearly started crying.  Here's where it gets funny.  I didn't have a Real Life invite card to leave her so I left a pen.  Today we go back to eat and when she brought us the credit card receipt to sign she handed it to us with the Real Life pen.  Marion and I just started laughing.
Sometimes God calls you to do little things that mean so much to others.
Zac

what follows is my responses from them.

That is so awesome Zac! Thanks so much for sharing and for being kind and showing the light of Christ!
In His Name,
Greg Blankenship

Love it!
Little things are a big deal!
Whatever it takes
