2 Timothy 2:1-14

I have a friend Mr. James T. Wilson and he taught me some things over the years which is fitting he is after all a former school teacher.  The first thing he taught me was a phrase.  "Think boy Think."  But i think we need his other common phrase.  "The Main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.."  Read it slowly and it makes sense.
In s Timothy Paul is asking his young ward Timothy to pay attention and learn some things.  I relate to comics and in my mind I get a mental image of Batman training a young Robin and saying something to the effect of "These are our methods, this is why we do the things we do, and this is what the mantle of the Bat means."

1.  "Timothy my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus."  Now that i have your attention Timothy be strong in God's grace.
2.  "You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses.  Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others."  Timothy was a pastor and his job was to take God's truth learn from it and then teach others to teach God's word.  It's called equipping the saints.  We're going to get a better picture in the next few verses but think about Timothy as being an officer in the military.  You've been through boot camp and he's taught you to survive and suddenly you're on the front lines and you've just been handed a weapon because Paul told Timothy to recruit you to teach others.  Game on!
3-4.  "Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.  Soldiers don't get tied up in the affairs of civilians life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them."  A soldier has to be ready to endure hardship and be ready to drop everything to fight.
5.  "And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules."  Ever watched a boxing match?  At the start of the fight both boxers meet in the center of the ring and the ref explains the rules.  Can't compete if you don't know what you're doing.
6.  "And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor."  Back to Timothy here pastors and teachers sow the seed of God's word and the life change God causes in people is the fruit of their hard work.
7.  Think about what I am saying.  The Lord will help you understand all these things."  See James 1:5
8.  "Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead.  This is the Good News i preach."  This is the truth we know and believe.
9.  "And because i preach the Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal but the word of God cannot be chained."  Paul was bounced from jail to jail but never stopped preaching the good news.  This man was on a mission.
10.  "So i am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen."  If his life glorifies God and draws people to God then it doesn't matter what happens to him.
11-13.  "This is a trustworthy saying.  If we die with him we will also live with him.  If we endure hardship, we will reign with him.  If we deny him he will deny us.  If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is."
14.  "Remind everyone about these things, and command them in God's presence to stop fighting over words, such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them."  Keep your focus on God and keep "the main thing the main thing"

Not ashamed 1 Timothy 1:6-10

I deal with Fear and Willpower more than the normal person because i am a fan of the Green Lantern comics.  I was going to work that into an illustration but I was reminded of something a friend had told me back in 1996 which has stuck with me for yrs.  I'm not sure if it was original to her or not.  "Fear knocked at the door; Faith answered but there was no one there."  --Rhonda Sliger.  Let's learn some things about our faith.

6.  "This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid hands on you."  Think of a fireplace it starts with a few logs and some matches then you have a small fire.  I watched my dad for yrs build a fire in a bbq pit and he started out with small fires but sometimes he needed a good sized fire he would feed that flame with a fan.  We have to feed our faith and relationship with God in order for it to grow.
7.  "For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity but of power, love and self- discipline."  Did you catch the math problem here?  God gives=Power, Love, Self-Discipline>fear.  See math can be fun.
8.  "So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord.  And don't be ashamed of me either even though I'm in prison for him.  With the strength God gives you be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News."  God gives us the strength and ability to not be ashamed and suffer for him.
9.  For God saved us and called us to live a holy life.  He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time--to show us grace through Christ Jesus."  See also Ephesians 2:1-10
10.  "And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus our Savior.  He broke the power of death and illuminated the way of life and immorality through the good news,"

Psalm 50

Some of you know i spent well over a yr and a half on the book of Psalms.  This week i was reading and came across Psalms 50 and it just got my attention.  I doubt i ever even did anything with this chapter before but it bears looking at.

1.  "The Lord, the Mighty One, is God and he has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets."  When i hear the word "summoned" i always hear this voice in my head.  In the 80's we had the real Transformers animated movie.  Orson Wells voiced a planet called Unicron and spoke this phrase "I have summoned you here for a purpose.  God summoned all humanity in this verse so that includes you and me and we need to pay attention.
2.  "From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty God shines in glorious radiance."  Think of the old song as you dwell on this verse.  "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."
3.  "Our God approaches and he is not silent.  Fire devours everything in his way and a great storm rages around him."  In our world we have gotten so accustomed to saying mother nature in regards to weather we often fail to acknowledge God is in control and he makes it do what he chooses."
4-6.  "He calls on the heavens above and the earth below to witness the judgement of his people.  Bring my faithful people to me- those who made a covenant with me by giving sacrifices.  Then let the heavens proclaim his justice for God himself will be the judge."  We just stepped into God's courtroom.
7.  "O, my people, listen as i speak.  Here are my charges against you, O Israel; I am God your God!"  God didn't leave any room for discussion.
8-13.  In these verses God establishes his self sufficiency he doesn't need humans we need him.
14.  "Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High."  This is what God wants from you and me.
15.  "Then call on me when you are in trouble and I will rescue you and you will give me glory."  Think back to when you may have taking a writing course.  This verse is something we all learned break it down and you have a perfect example of cause and effect.
16-20.  God describes the actions of the wicked.
21.  "While you did all this I remained silent and you thought I didn't care, but now I will rebuke you listing all my charges against you."  Judgement day is coming and God has been paying attention to everything.
22.  "Repent, all of you, who forget me or I will tear you apart and no one will help you."  Pretty straightforward repent and turn back to God.
23.  "But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me.  If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God."  God wants our thanks and praise.

Hebrews 13:15-16
15Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.16And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.…

I found the lyric video for this one because i think everyone should learn this song.
