Admission of the problem.
We have a problem of sin, and we
don’t like to admit it.
Romans 3:23 “For everyone has sinned;
we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”
There’s a part of us called pride
that makes us want to think we are better than other people. Recently I
watched this movie called The Masked Saint a really awesome movie on Tubi.
It’s about a pro wrestler who becomes a preacher, but he also becomes a
vigilante crime fighter. At one point he saves a prostitute from being
beat to death. She later starts coming to church. All the
churchgoers start reacting in disgust when she shows up. The pastor calls
out the entire church from the pulpit for their behavior because there’s not a
single person in the whole congregation without some sin in their past or
present. I was reading in Matthew 9 and Jesus did the same exact thing
with the Pharisees.
Matthew 9:9-13
“As Jesus was walking along, he saw a
man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me and be
my disciple,’. Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed
him. Later Matthew invited Jesus and his Disciples to his home as dinner
guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners.
But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples. ‘Why
does your teacher eat with such scum?’
When Jesus heard this, he said. ‘Healthy
people don’t need a doctor— sick people do.’ Then he added, ‘Now go and
learn the meaning of this Scripture:’ I want you to show mercy; not offer
sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous,
but those who know they are sinners.’”
So many reactions in this.
Jesus called a tax collector. In any setting Matthew would be the
lowest of the low. Then the Pharisees called him and his friends scum and
sinners. Then Jesus put them in their place and told them to get off their high
horse. We can as people have all these different reactions and we need to
admit we need God more than we realize. I’ve said it before we have big
attitudes for people who tip over when putting on underwear. Simmer Down
now! We all need Jesus. Every one of us needs to seek him!
